Maeve's First Snow

On Sunday three out of the four of us seemed to come down with some sort of food poisoning. This made for a pretty unpleasant end to our weekend, but the silver lining was opening up the shades this morning and finding SNOW! Since I was home thanks to the previous days' unpleasantries, I bundled of the kids and we headed outside.

At first Maeve simply walked around in the snow. This suited her perfectly fine- she was pretty happy to just be outside since it's something she doesn't get to do as often as she'd like. She was content to watch her brother struggle to make snowballs. The world was cold, white, and beautiful to her. She spent a lot of time just looking around. After some time and a lot of watching her brother and me, she decided it might be okay to touch the snow. She stooped down and tentatively stuck one finger into the white powder. She quickly snapped her hand back and signed "all done" but did not stand up or look to me for help. I waited. She continued to squat and then put three fingers into the powder! This continued for quite some time.

Meanwhile, Graham did not waste any time. He anxiously headed outdoors as snow flakes continued to fall from the sky and immediately beckoned me to help him make snowballs. I made him a few while giving Maeve room to explore on her own. He quickly threw them at Allie's car. Then we noticed Brent watching us from the window (he was still not feeling well enough to join us) so we lobbed a few at him even though they couldn't really hit him, of course. This was especially intriguing to Graham, but he remained more interested in hitting Allie's car which was close and very easy to reach.

Then, as inevitably happens when we are out in the snow. Graham removed his mittens and placed them on the trooper telling me, "Trooper cold, Mama. Better get gloves." This sounded painfully familiar to my pleading with him prior to heading outside to wear gloves. Eventually I got them back on him with the promise of more snowballs. However, my victory was very short lived as the Trooper was much more cold than Graham could possibly be, according to Graham of course. I would like to note, at this point, that we later went for coffee and forgot the gloves on the Trooper (the poor vehicle was very cold after all) and now said gloves are missing.

Good bye, Gloves. You lasted an entire two snow seasons and for that I will forever remember you.

Before we headed inside to convince Brent that coffee from our beloved Dutch Bros was a necessity (and chocolate milk for Graham, of course), Maeve made sure to sit in the snow and I made sure to silently thank whatever powers exist that I decided to put her in her snowsuit that's still a little too big. Then we took the extremely long journey to the stairs (it's normally 30 seconds, but when there's snow it's more like 15 minutes... because, you know, it's snow!). Anyway, that is the story of Maeve's first snow outing and Graham's regularly scheduled glove reluctance.
