Before the sickness and the snow of this weekend, Graham had a birthday and a birthday party! On his actual birthday he went to dinner with his lovely parents and then spent an evening at the Nickel Arcade with Dad (pictures and post to come later if I remember and school/work doesn't take my life over). However, the focus of this post is his amazing Lego party!First, there were decorations. Brent spent some time rebuilding many of Graham's Lego sets to use as decorations. We wanted to avoid using confetti or anything else that Maeve might eat. We also wanted to use something that could be reused later as we'd opted for paper plates and cups over using our own dishes. We were even using plastic forks! The Lego creations were a great addition to Graham's party, though, and it was neat to be able to put his sets on display.
Then there was the cake! Or, rather, the cupcakes. Allie helped out tremendously by baking a carrot cake and the bulk of the cupcakes the night before the party. This meant I simply had to frost, sprinkle, and adorn each cupcake with the wonderful lego candy (that, as Allie pointed out, tasted very similar to smarties). Before the party was actually upon us, I had big plans to make lego brick cakes. However, I decided about a week beforehand that making lego brick cakes on a weekend that also had game night and Spanish homework due sounded like a nightmare and opted for this instead. It worked!
Oh, and the Best Mother award does not go to me (ever), but to my own mom! This is the amazing "Pin the Head on the Lego Guy" game she made for Graham out of water color paper and an actual wood board. Yep, she's amazing like that. It was a little above the heads of most of Graham's likewise aged guests but fun nonetheless and can be reused if Graham requests yet another Lego party (which would not be surprising in the least, though I'm totally pushing for Super Mario next year. I've waited long enough!).
The favors are a bit hard to see but they are Lego necklaces! They were fabulous except I need to find something better than the particular adhesive I used to attach the bail to the Lego. The tag you see in the picture holds the name of each child the necklace is intended for. It's tied to the ball chain with blue ribbon. We tried to use primary colors throughout the party to complement the Lego theme.
Another game, intended mostly for adults but also still fun, was "Guess How May Legos?" The winner was my lovely niece who offered her prize (a Lego set, of course) up to the Birthday boy (because he wasn't spoiled enough!?). The total Legos in the jar? I'll never tell! Unless you were at the party... because then, well... I already told you.
The highlight of the party, of course, was the guests. Graham was delighted to see both of his Uncles from Brent's side and their respective families, his favorite van owner Amy and her inquisitive children, the wonderful Briana and her husband and two boys (who were perfect playmates for Graham and Maeve!), Grandma Kacky, his Allie, the always beloved K and M, and even Brent's mom via Skype! (If I forgot you then you have permission to hang me). His room was pretty trashed later and it was totally worth it!
